Usually
the Universities are more then happy to support their teams,
and most of them do so. In these cases, the University pays
the fees, provides access to the working materials, and pays
for the travel expenses of the team members and coach if the
team is selected to attend one of the Regional Finals.
In a growing number of Universities, the students are evaluated
academically in the course of the ELMC Competition, and their
performance in the ELMC is taken into consideration for the
completion of European Law related subjects.
If this is not yet your case, here are some suggestions of
what you can do to raise the sponsoring that your team may
need in order to participate in the Competition. Even tough
we do not guarantee any results, these tips are the result
of our own experience:
1. Prepare a "sponsors wish list", with the names
of Institutions, which you think could be open to supporting
your team. In principle, this list would include: top law
firms, education departments of EU Countries Embassies outside
Europe, EU delegation in your city, Foundations which usually
sponsor your University, local Ministries of: Justice, Education,
Foreign affairs, big international consultancy firms.
2. Call the operators at the head offices in these institutions
and find out who is the top person to deal with (recruitment,
education, human resources, etc).
3. Draft a presentation letter of yourself and other colleagues
involved, attach your résumé, and explain why
you are approaching them.
4. At this point, ask for a meeting with the Dean or Rector
of your Faculty, explain what is happening, and ask for help:
namely contacts in these Institutions, and an introduction
letter. You will surely get a lot of support.
5.
Find out if the sponsoring amounts that these Institutions
would give you can be deducted from their taxes under a state
act for patronship (it usually is), and if so mention it in
your letter, on the first page.
6. Now you are ready to send an information pack to about
20 or 30 Institutions which includes: your introductory letter
and sponsoring request; your résumé; and an
Introduction from the Dean or Rector of your University (if
possible).
7. Post it all, wait 1week, and call them. Some of them will
probably be quite interested, other will not, but hopefully
you will eventually be able to schedule some introductory
meetings, at which you will explain exactly what you are applying
for.
8. This is easier and less time consuming if done with the
help of all the team members you have in mind for the composition
of the team.
9. If all this fails, the ELMC Society Board will take into
consideration a limited amount of well founded Regional Final
fee exemption requests aiming to promote equal opportunities
for all students, if you wish to know more, contact the OT
